Power Generation Resumes at Srisailam as Inflows Stabilise
The Srisailam is a very big reservoir — a man-made lake — that holds water for two states in India called Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Water has been flowing into the lake from another dam called the Jurala project.
Because so much water came in, the people in charge switched the machines back on to make electricity.
This kind of electricity is called hydel power, and it is made when rushing water spins big machines.
Right now, the machines can make about 1,300 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power many homes.
The lake is about 169 tmc feet full, and it can hold up to about 216 tmc feet, a unit scientists use to measure huge amounts of water.
All the doors of the dam are closed so that water is not wasted.
The people in charge say that clean drinking water is the most important thing, so they save water for that first.
Later, they will check how much more water comes in and then decide whether to give some water to farms for growing food.
Hydel power generation has resumed at the Srisailam reservoir, with power houses of both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana utilising the available water.
About 62,493 cusecs of water is being used for power generation — 27,178 cusecs through the right bank power house and 35,315 cusecs through the left bank power station.
Based on the current discharge, the project is estimated to generate around 1,300 MW of electricity, with all spillway gates currently closed.
Inflows declined from around 2.40 lakh cusecs on August 6 to 2,11,632 cusecs by Saturday afternoon, while storage stood at 169.47 tmc ft against a full capacity of 215.807 tmc ft.
Officials are prioritising drinking water needs, with a decision on irrigation releases to be taken after monitoring inflows over the coming week.
