Bengal CM announces Rs 10,000 monthly allowance for Loktantra Senanis
A leader called the Chief Minister of West Bengal made a big announcement.
He wants to help a group of people called 'Democracy Fighters'.
These are people who were put in jail a long time ago, between 1975 and 1977, because they spoke up for democracy and voting.
During that time, people in the country could not vote or speak freely.
The Chief Minister said about one lakh people were jailed across the country, including at least 5,000 in Bengal.
Now, these fighters will receive 10,000 rupees every month.
They can also ride government buses for free and get free medical care at government hospitals.
Each of the 325 fighters was given a shiny copper medal to say thank you.
If a fighter has passed away, their husband or wife can get the same help.
The Chief Minister also wants to remember another leader named Syama Prasad Mookerjee and teach his ideas and history in school books.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a Rs 10,000 monthly allowance for 'Loktantra Senanis' at the state secretariat Nabanna.
The Democracy Fighters will also get free travel in government buses and free medical assistance at government hospitals.
325 Loktantra Senanis were felicitated with copper medals at the event, where Industries and Commerce Minister Tapas Roy was present.
'Loktantra Senani' refers to people imprisoned under laws like MISA or DIR during the 1975-1977 Emergency; the CM said about one lakh were jailed nationally and at least 5,000 in Bengal.
Adhikari announced a special committee for Syama Prasad Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary to include his ideology and the partition of Bengal's history in textbooks.
