Maharashtra Makes Aadhaar Verification Mandatory for Property Registration

Maharashtra is changing how people register property documents.

Starting October 1, people will generally need to verify their identity using Aadhaar.

The rule covers 63 types of documents.

These include property sales, mortgages and partition documents.

The government says this can help stop fake people and witnesses from being used in property deals.

People who do not yet have Aadhaar can show proof that they applied for it.

They must also provide other government identity documents and papers showing their relationship to the transaction.

Children must apply with permission from a parent or legal guardian.

The government says a child or eligible beneficiary cannot be refused registration only because an Aadhaar number is unavailable.
