Operation Sindoor Declassified: India Narrowed 34 Targets to Nine
After a terrible attack killed people in a town called Pahalgam, India's leaders wanted to respond.
They made a list of 34 places connected to the people who planned the attack.
They studied each place very carefully, using information gathered around the clock.
In the end, they chose only nine places to strike.
Five were in a disputed area called Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and four were inside Pakistan.
India's leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said they should hit only terrorist camps and not hurt everyday people.
The Indian Army hit seven places, and the Indian Air Force hit two more.
Those two places were Muridke and Bahawalpur, which were bases for groups called Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.
India's leaders said the goal was to send a strong message that such attacks will not be tolerated.
They chose careful, precise strikes instead of starting a big war with Pakistan.
Newly declassified accounts of Operation Sindoor show India's military narrowed an initial list of 34 targets to nine for precision strikes after the Pahalgam terror attack.
The nine selected targets included five in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and four inside Pakistan.
The Indian Army struck seven targets, while the Indian Air Force struck Bahawalpur and Muridke, identified as the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba respectively.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the nine-target plan on April 30, reportedly after seeking around 10–12 hours to weigh the risks; National Security Adviser Ajit Doval said Modi insisted on avoiding collateral damage.
The strikes were a response to the April 22, 2026 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed civilians, and were aimed at terrorist camps rather than waging war against Pakistan.
