Gurugram Fake Call Centre Targeting US Citizens Busted, 11 Arrested
Police in Gurugram say they found a fake call centre that targeted people in the United States.
Eleven people were arrested during the raid.
The suspects allegedly pretended to be customer-service workers for famous brands.
They told victims that their phones had viruses or technical problems.
They also showed fake letters from a US government agency to scare people.
Victims were then asked to pay large amounts of money for help.
Police say the money was sent to foreign bank accounts or collected through gift cards and card numbers.
The group had reportedly operated from a rented house for two to three months.
The investigation is still continuing.
Haryana Police raided an unauthorised call centre in J Block, Palam Vihar, Gurugram, and arrested 11 people.
The suspects allegedly posed as customer service representatives of well-known US brands, including Apple.
They reportedly used fake virus warnings, technical problems and Federal Trade Commission threats to frighten victims.
Police said victims were duped of between USD 10,000 and 20,000 through bank transfers, gift vouchers or card numbers.
Officers seized nine laptops, 20 mobile phones, communication equipment, two cars, a motorcycle and a scooter.
