Manipur Students Demand NRC Before Census 2027, IDP Return
In a place called Manipur in India, many students went out on the streets to protest.
They carried signs and shouted 'No NRC, No Census.'
NRC is a special list of citizens.
The students want the government to make this list before counting people for the Census.
They also want people who had to leave their homes to come back first.
The Census is a big count of everyone in the country, planned for 2027.
The students are worried that counting people before the NRC could cause problems.
Some protests got very loud, and police used tear gas to stop students.
The students hope the government will listen to them.
Hundreds of students rallied in Manipur's Imphal West district demanding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be implemented before the Census.
Students also demanded that internally displaced people (IDPs) return to their original homes before any census activity.
The rally was organized by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) Student Wing, starting from Tiddim Road and covering nearly 2 km.
Separate protests occurred at DM College of Teacher Education and CC Higher Secondary School, and police fired tear gas outside the Directorate of Census Operations.
Census 2027 preparations are underway, with self-enumeration beginning August 17 and the main house-listing operation scheduled from September 1 to 30.
