NHRC Directs States to Protect Vendors During Festive Season
The National Human Rights Commission wants officials to protect vendors during upcoming festivals.
Some complaints said vendors were removed, had their goods taken, were fined or harassed.
The Commission says vendors should not be removed without a good reason.
If a place must be cleared for fire or public safety, officials should offer vendors another suitable place to work.
Officials should deal with complaints of harassment, extortion or interference according to the law.
The Commission also wants local vendors and traditional work to be supported.
State and Union Territory officials must share and carry out the directions.
Reports on pending matters are due by 18 October 2026.
