NHRC Summons Telangana Official Over Alleged Student Ragging Death
The National Human Rights Commission is examining the death of student Sai Teja.
A complaint says that senior students severely bullied and harassed him.
It says Sai Teja died by suicide while staying in a private hostel.
The complaint also says he recorded a video describing what happened to him.
It alleges that his college did not properly enforce rules against ragging.
The NHRC asked Telangana officials to investigate and send a report about their actions.
The Commission says it did not receive the report after more than four months.
Because of this, it summoned a senior higher-education official to answer questions.
The official may avoid appearing in person if the reports arrive at least one week before the hearing.
The NHRC issued conditional summons to Telangana’s principal secretary for higher education over Sai Teja’s alleged ragging-related death.
Sai Teja, a Scheduled Tribe BTech student at Siddhartha Engineering College, allegedly died by suicide after harassment by senior students at a private hostel.
A complaint alleged that the college failed to enforce anti-ragging measures and applicable UGC guidelines.
The NHRC said Telangana had not submitted an action taken report more than four months after receiving its request.
The official or an authorised representative must appear in New Delhi on October 28 unless the reports are submitted at least one week beforehand.
