Tamil Nadu Announces Expanded Support for Adi Dravida Hostels

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister visited a hostel for Adi Dravida students and heard their complaints.

After that, the government announced more help for students living in these hostels.

Each student will receive more money for food every month.

Hostels will also receive more money for repairs and maintenance.

A new organisation called Aran will supervise the hostels and help solve complaints quickly.

Ambedkar reading centres will be built to help students study and prepare for exams.

The government also plans to build 150 new hostels and improve schools and community facilities.

Other plans include new houses, business support, loans and a cultural centre for tribal communities.

Key facts

School hostel food allowance
Increased from Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 1,800 per student per month.
College hostel food allowance
Increased from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 per student per month.
Allocated funding
Rs. 200 crore for hostel-related nutrition and health improvements.
Maintenance support
Raised to Rs. 75,000 annually for school hostels and Rs. 1 lakh for college hostels.
New hostels
150 hostels for Adi Dravida and Scheduled Tribe students at a total cost of Rs. 160 crore.
Community centres
100 community centres will be built in areas with large Adi Dravida populations.
Housing
Plans include 5,000 houses for Adi Dravida communities, 2,000 for tribal communities and 2,500 for sanitation workers.
