Karnataka Protesters Halt Vijay Film Over Cauvery Water Release
In Karnataka, people are worried because there isn’t enough water for drinking and for animals.
A group of farmers and supporters decided to protest a decision that would send a lot of water to the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.
They tore up posters of a movie starring Tamil Nadu’s chief minister and stopped the movie from being shown in a local theater.
They also blocked roads and asked the state government not to give away the water.
The Karnataka chief minister said the state will fight the decision in court and invited the Tamil Nadu chief minister to see how bad the water shortage is.
The protest shows how important water is for people’s daily life.
Karnataka activists in Mandya and Mysuru protest the CWRC order to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days amid severe drought.
Protesters tore posters of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s film “Jana Nayagan” and halted its screening at Gurushri Theatre.
Activists submitted a memorandum to the Karnataka government urging it not to release water and warned that protests would intensify if the order is followed.
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the state will appeal the CWRC directive and seek legal relief, inviting his Tamil Nadu counterpart to inspect reservoirs.
The CWRC’s order would provide Tamil Nadu about four TMC of water over the 15‑day period.
