Road Rerouting Key Hurdle in Jalgaon Airport Expansion, Ministry Says
There is an airport in India called Jalgaon Airport.
It wants to grow bigger so that large passenger planes and cargo planes can land there.
But a public road called the Nashirabad-Umale road runs right through the airport's land.
Because of this road, the land cannot be used as one connected area.
A government ministry says the road must be moved before the runway can be made longer.
Bigger planes need a longer runway to take off and land safely.
The airport also has plans to make its terminal building more than twice as big.
The new terminal would be able to hold 300 passengers at busy times.
The airport already has new equipment that helps pilots land safely in foggy or cloudy weather.
Small airlines fly from this airport to cities like Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Goa.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation says the Nashirabad-Umale public road passing through Jalgaon Airport land must be rerouted before expansion can proceed.
Runway extension needed for larger passenger jets and dedicated cargo freighters remains on hold until state authorities complete rerouting and land consolidation.
The disclosure came in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question raised by Jalgaon MP Smita Uday Wagh.
The Airports Authority of India proposes expanding the terminal from 700 sq.m. to about 1,500 sq.m. with a peak-hour capacity of 300 passengers.
Doppler VOR/DME navigation facilities were installed and made operational at the airport on May 16, 2024, to aid landings in marginal weather.
