RBI Governor Urges Fintechs to Protect Data and Expand Inclusion
India uses financial technology for many everyday activities, such as digital payments.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said this progress has come through cooperation between the government and private companies.
He pointed to millions of bank accounts, pension users and digital transactions as evidence.
But many people still do not use formal financial services.
Malhotra asked fintech companies to help these people instead of focusing mainly on customers who already use banks and digital tools.
He said people will use financial technology only if they trust it.
Companies should treat personal data like something they are looking after for someone else.
They should collect it for a clear reason, use it only with permission and protect it carefully.
He also said large fintechs must prepare for cyberattacks and other disruptions, and announced a new self-regulatory organisation for the sector.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said fintech has become part of everyday financial life in India.
He cited 57 crore Jan Dhan accounts, more than 9 crore Atal Pension Yojana beneficiaries and around 280 billion digital transactions last year.
Malhotra urged fintechs to prioritize financial inclusion, customer service and people still outside the formal financial system.
He said consumer data should be collected for clear purposes, used within consent and protected as a fiduciary responsibility.
The United Fintech Forum was recognized as the fintech sector’s second self-regulatory organisation, while corporate-bond tokenisation was launched.

Quotes
Sanjay Malhotra
Reserve Bank of India Governor
“The harder work of reaching those still outside the system is where the potential to impact is least realised today and where it matters the most. I would only ask that connecting the last man standing in the queue remains the focus of today's innovation for all of you present here and not merely a footnote to it.”

“I would describe this as the obligation to be not just too big to fail, but too significant to be careless. Operational resilience, business continuity, and cyber security are not burdens or costs to be minimized. They are the price of the scale a firm has achieved.”
