Trinidad and Tobago Pursues UPI Adoption, Deepening India Partnership
Trinidad and Tobago wants to use India’s digital payment system, called UPI.
If completed, it would be the first Caribbean country to do so.
UPI can help people and businesses make payments quickly.
The plan is being developed by Indian and Trinidad and Tobago organizations.

India and Trinidad and Tobago have had diplomatic relations for 64 years.

Trinidad and Tobago will serve on the United Nations Security Council during 2027 and 2028.
Trinidad and Tobago is pursuing implementation of India’s Unified Payments Interface, which would make it the first Caribbean nation to adopt the technology.
The initiative is being advanced through an agreement between National Payments Corporation of India International Payments Limited and Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Digital Transformation.
The project aims to create a real-time, efficient digital payments system in Trinidad and Tobago.
The countries are strengthening cooperation after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, during which six agreements and Memoranda of Understanding were signed.
Trinidad and Tobago also highlighted its energy sector, healthcare and digital cooperation with India, cultural links, and its election to the United Nations Security Council for 2027–28.
