Thousands Rally Against SC Sub-Categorisation; Memorandum Submitted
In India, some groups of people receive special help from the government so they can fairly get government jobs and places in schools.
These groups are called Scheduled Castes, and there are 59 of them.
Together, they get a 13% share of government jobs and seats.
Some people from these groups wanted that 13% share to be split up into smaller parts for each group.
The state government seemed ready to do this and began working on the idea.
But many people did not like the plan because they felt it would cause trouble and divide the groups.
So thousands of people gathered in the city of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for a big protest rally.
They walked through the city to the office of an important government officer.
They gave him a letter asking the government to stop the split, and also asking for more jobs and help in private companies.
Thousands of citizens joined an 'Anti-Sub-categorisation Committee' rally at Kranti Chowk in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar against the state government's proposed sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes.
The Scheduled Caste category comprises 59 castes and receives a 13% quota in government reservations.
Leaders including Republican Sena chief Anandraj Ambedkar, MP Chandrakant Handore, former minister Babanrao Gholap, Rajkumar Badole and Baburao Mane led the morcha.
A delegation submitted a memorandum to the divisional commissioner demanding cancellation of sub-categorisation and of the Badar committee, immediate implementation of reservations, a special drive to fill vacancies, and reservations in the private sector.
The procession, held amid light drizzle under heavy police security, moved from Kranti Chowk to the divisional commissioner's office.
