ECI Eliminated 15% of India's Population: Ex-CEC Quraishi Takes Dig at SIR · deccanchronicle.com

The Election Commission is checking voter lists in several parts of India.

This process is called the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.

The Commission says it wants to remove duplicate, outdated, or ineligible names.

It also says eligible voters should not be left out.

Former election chief SY Quraishi criticized the process.

He used sarcasm to say that millions of people had effectively been removed from the lists.

He asked the Commission to say how many illegal immigrants it had actually found.

Opposition leaders have also alleged that too many voters were removed, especially in Maharashtra.

The disagreement is about how to keep voter lists accurate without stopping eligible citizens from voting.

Quotes

SY Quraishi

Former Chief Election Commissioner of India

“I would like to compliment the Election Commission for completing a very difficult mission of eliminating about 14–15 crore population of India through this exercise. I don't know how many illegal immigrants they have found, which was the main purpose of this exercise. It's a pity they have not disclosed this figure.”

“I think the entire SIR exercise is not well-intentioned. The way it has deleted crores of voters is tinkering with democracy. You are a citizen of India. I'm a citizen of India. Voting is our constitutional right. Article 326 says that everyone shall be registered.”
