The National Medical Commission has approved more places for students who want to study medicine.

There are now 1,40,214 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year.

These seats are spread across 836 medical colleges, excluding Institutes of National Importance.

Government colleges added 2,786 seats, and private colleges added 10,400.

Karnataka received the largest increase, with 1,650 new seats.

Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh also received large increases.

Colleges and counselling committees must check that every seat is officially approved.

Colleges that admit too many students could face regulatory or penal action.
