Orphaned Rhino Calf Rescued and Released into Jaldapara National Park
A little rhino baby lost its mommy.
The mommy rhino got very scared and stressed because another rhino chased her, and she died.
Now the baby rhino was all alone.
It wandered into a village and people were worried about it.
Forest workers tried to catch it to help, but too many people came to look and scared the baby.
So the workers waited until the evening when the baby was calmer.
A vet gave the baby medicine to make it sleepy.
Then the baby was carefully put in a cage and carried on a tractor.
In the evening, the baby rhino was set free in the grasslands of Jaldapara National Park.
Forest workers will keep watching the baby to make sure it stays safe.
A one-and-a-half-year-old rhino calf was orphaned after its mother died of extreme stress following a chase by a male rhino.
The exhausted and dehydrated calf strayed into Sinhapara village on the outskirts of Jaldapara's west range in Alipurduar.
An earlier attempt to secure the calf with nets was called off after hundreds of onlookers crowded around and stressed the animal.
Around 60 forest personnel from the Jaldapara wildlife division, along with police for crowd management, handled the operation.
The calf was tranquilised by a veterinary team, transported in a cage by tractor, and released into grasslands near the Harindanga watchtower at around 6:15pm.
The calf will remain under observation by foresters to ensure its safety, particularly from adult male rhinos.
