Vizhinjam opens gates for full-fledged EXIM cargo operations
A big sea port in Kerala called Vizhinjam used to only have ships stop by to move their containers to other ships.
Now it will also handle containers that come from or go to the land.
The leader of Kerala, Chief Minister Satheesan, visited the port on Tuesday to make sure everything is ready.
He was joined by another minister named P.K. Kunhalikutty.
They looked at how the port works and checked the traffic management system.
The port is run by a big company called Adani.
Starting Tuesday, containers can be brought into and taken out of the port by land.
This is a big step for Kerala because it could help the state trade more with other countries and create new jobs.
A minister from the national government was supposed to come for the launch, but he did not make it.
Still, everyone thinks this is a very important moment for the port.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan visited Vizhinjam International Seaport on Tuesday to review operational readiness ahead of the start of land-based EXIM cargo operations.
The port, previously functioning only as a transshipment port, opened its gates for cargo containers to be brought in and taken out of the port.
Satheesan was accompanied by Industries, Information Technology and Commerce Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty during the review.
It was the Chief Minister's first detailed official engagement at Vizhinjam since taking charge after the April 2026 Assembly elections.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was scheduled to attend the EXIM launch but will not be arriving for the event.
