RTI Reveals 8.23 Lakh Vacancies Across Central Government
The government has approved many jobs in its offices, but many of those jobs are currently empty.
An RTI request found that about 8.23 lakh posts were vacant on March 1, 2024.
This means roughly one out of every five approved jobs had no employee.
The largest gaps were in civilian defence offices and the Railways.
The Home Affairs Ministry also had more than one lakh empty posts.
Smaller departments, including health, education, agriculture and the environment, also had shortages.
Chandra Shekhar Gaur, who sought the information, said the government should fill the posts quickly.
He said this could create jobs and help government departments work better.
An RTI response found 8,23,656 vacant posts among 39,23,212 sanctioned civilian central government positions.
The figures, based on staffing as of March 1, 2024, show 30,99,556 employees in position.
Civilian defence establishments had 2,42,243 vacancies, while the Railways had 2,40,125.
The Defence Ministry, Railways and Home Affairs together accounted for about 5.93 lakh vacancies.
The data excludes vacancies in public sector banks, public sector undertakings and the armed forces.
