USCIS Sets September 18 Cutoff for New Green Card Form
USCIS is changing the form people in the United States use to apply for a Green Card.
The new Form I-485 will be dated September 18, 2026.
It replaces the version dated January 20, 2025.
People can use the old form only if they submit it before September 18.
They cannot use the new form before September 18.
There will be no period when both forms are accepted.
Using the wrong form could cause an application to be rejected before it is reviewed.
The change is connected to new rules about whether someone might mainly depend on government support.
USCIS will introduce a revised Form I-485 edition dated September 18, 2026.
The new edition will replace the January 20, 2025, version of the Green Card application.
USCIS will reject the older edition if it is postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18.
The revised edition will be accepted only when postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18.
The update is intended to align adjustment-of-status procedures with new public-charge rules taking effect that day.
