Mamata Banerjee faces protests, car attacked with stones and mud

Mamata Banerjee used to be the chief minister of a state in India called West Bengal.

She went to visit the family of a party worker named Birju Keot who had died.

Along the way, a group of people surrounded her car and shouted that she is a thief.

They also smeared mud on her car, and she says they hurled big stones, shoes and water bottles at it.

Banerjee said the stones were so dangerous that she could have been badly hurt if the window had been open.

She said the police knew she was coming but did not protect her, and she called the whole incident a conspiracy.

The people who protested said Banerjee only came to disturb their peaceful area.

The worker had died after falling ill while he was in police custody in a place called Halisahar.

Police had to step in and help her convoy leave safely.
