Kerala Government Opposes Proposed Keralam Metro Name Change
Kochi Metro’s proposed ‘Keralam Metro’ name change faces government pushback - Telegraph India · telegraphindia.com

Kochi Metro is considering changing its name to Keralam Metro Rail Limited.

The company says it now works on more than trains in Kochi.

It is also involved with the Kochi Water Metro and electric mobility projects.

It has been asked to help with proposed metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.

Because of this, the company says a Kerala-wide name would fit better.

The Kerala government says it did not approve the change.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan also said the proposal had not been formally brought to the government.

The name change can therefore proceed only if the required government approval is obtained.

Quotes

Loknath Behera

Managing director of Kochi Metro Rail Limited and former state police chief

“Apart from the Kochi Metro, the KMRL is also implementing the Kochi Water Metro and electric mobility projects. It has also been entrusted with the implementation of the proposed Metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Hence, the existing city-specific name no longer reflects the company’s present and future state-wide responsibilities.”

“Neither has the state government taken such a decision nor is it before us for consideration. Why should I react to such news when the KMRL unilaterally took a decision on name change when it had not come before the purview of the government?”
