Madhvi Parekh retrospective at Alipore Museum shows six decades of work
There is a new art show featuring an artist named Madhvi Parekh.
Her art is on display at a museum in Alipore.
The show is about her whole life of making art, almost sixty years of it.
Madhvi did not go to art school.
She started drawing in 1964 when she was waiting for her first baby.
She learned to make pictures from the rangoli, wall paintings and crafts she saw at home and in her village.
Her village is called Sanjaya, and it is in Gujarat, India.
Her pictures are full of birds, fish, animals, gods, acrobats and villagers living together.
She also made sketchbooks every day from 1978 to 2018, and these are like a private diary of drawings.
Her art feels simple but it is made with great skill and care.
DAG presented 'Madhvi Parekh: A Life in Line, Memory and Myth' at the Alipore Museum.
The exhibition brought together nearly six decades of the artist's work.
Parekh began drawing only in 1964, while pregnant with her first child, after a late, self-directed entry into art.
Her work draws on the visual life of Sanjaya, her village in Gujarat, including rangoli, embroidered cloth, painted walls and travelling circuses.
Sketchbooks from 1978 to 2018 form the quiet centre of the exhibition, showing drawing as daily discipline.
