Sensex, Nifty fall on crude prices and Tata stock sell-off
People buy and sell small pieces of companies called shares in places called stock markets.
India has two famous stock markets called the Sensex and the Nifty.
On Wednesday, both markets fell for the second day in a row, which means share prices went down.
One reason was that oil became expensive, and high oil prices make businesses and investors worried.
Another reason was the leader of the Tata companies, Mr. N Chandrasekaran, said he will not ask to stay as chairman after his term ends in 2027.
When a big company leader says they are leaving, some investors get nervous and sell shares of those companies.
TCS, the biggest Tata company in the Sensex, lost the most value, dropping almost four percent.
Investors were also waiting for important price news from India and the United States.
Even though Indian markets fell, many other markets in Asia and Europe did fine, which shows markets move up and down all the time.
The BSE Sensex fell 187.90 points (0.24%) to 77,966.35 and the NSE Nifty dipped 35.75 points (0.15%) to 24,435.95, a second straight day of declines.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said he will not seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, triggering selling in Tata Group stocks.
TCS was the biggest Sensex laggard, falling 3.71%, while Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro and Infosys also declined.
Brent crude retested the $90-per-barrel level, easing 0.17% to $88.76, as investors awaited key inflation readings in India and the US.
Global cues were mixed: South Korea's KOSPI jumped 3.68% and European markets were largely positive, while FIIs bought equities worth Rs 258.55 crore on Tuesday.
