MHA Asks States to Fast-Track Extradition Pleas, Upgrade Jails
The Ministry of Home Affairs in India is like the big boss of safety for the country.
It has asked all states to work faster when they want to bring back people who ran away to other countries after doing something wrong.
When a foreign country catches a person because of an international alert, India must send the right papers quickly.
If the papers are late, the person might be let go and become very hard to find again.
India has already brought back 274 such people from 36 countries since 2021.
The ministry also wants police to prepare all the paperwork before the person is even found.
It wants jails to be good enough to match international standards.
Officials are also talking about making special teams to handle these cases.
This way, India can bring back people who need to face justice.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed states and Union Territories to process extradition requests for fugitives abroad without delay.
India has brought back 274 fugitives from 36 countries since 2021 through extradition and deportation efforts.
Delays in sending provisional arrest or formal extradition requests could let fugitives be released or leave foreign jurisdictions.
The MHA advised agencies to prepare extradition dossiers in advance for cases with Interpol Red Notices.
Officials discussed setting up extradition cells, developing internationally compliant prison facilities, and converting Blue Notices into Red Notices.
