Savarkar Defamation Case: CD With Rahul Gandhi's Speech Found Blank In Court · NDTV

A court in India is handling a defamation case brought by Satyaki Savarkar against Rahul Gandhi.

The case is about a speech Rahul Gandhi gave in 2023 in London, where he allegedly made defamatory remarks about V D Savarkar, a freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue.

Satyaki Savarkar, who is V D Savarkar's grand-nephew, submitted a CD containing the video of the speech as evidence.

However, the CD was found to be blank and could not be played in court.

The court also rejected a request to play an additional CD, stating that there was no such CD on record.

The court mentioned that the YouTube URL provided as evidence is not supported by a certificate as per Section 65-B of the Indian Evidence Act and hence cannot be admitted as evidence.

Satyaki Savarkar's lawyer has sought a judicial inquiry into the matter.

Quotes

Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar

Lawyer representing Satyaki Savarkar

“When the case was registered in 2023 in the court, we had submitted the original CD containing the alleged video along with the URL of the YouTube channel. The other judge, in whose court the case was being heard then, saw that the video in the CD was indeed playing. Now, the CD shows no data.”
