India's Spider-Man: creators, comics and cultural reinvention
Behind the origins of India’s Spider-Man: Satyajit Ray, Stan Lee and a Rs 10 comic · indianexpress.com

Imagine if your favorite superhero came from your own country.

That is what happened when an Indian version of Spider-Man was created.

His name is Pavitr Prabhakar, and he lives in Mumbai, a huge city in India.

Instead of being bitten by a radioactive spider, he gets his powers from a wise old yogi.

He wears a traditional dhoti, mojari shoes and gold bangles instead of a regular superhero suit.

He is a village boy on a scholarship who feels out of place among rich city people.

Indian comic fans loved him, and he later appeared in a big animated movie called Across the Spider-Verse.

Some people say a famous Indian filmmaker named Satyajit Ray once talked with Spider-Man's creator about making an Indian hero, but no one has proven it.

The people who made this hero wanted Indian kids to see themselves in their favorite superhero.

It shows that heroes can come from anywhere and from any culture.
