India Marks 50th Anniversary of Bonded Labour Abolition Act

India is celebrating 50 years since it passed a law to end bonded labour, but many people are still trapped in forced work.

In 2024, police recorded 2,135 cases of human trafficking, and the states of Odisha, Maharashtra, and Telangana rescued the most people.

About 40% of those rescued were forced into sexual exploitation, and 26% into forced labour.

The Supreme Court in 2026 said that rescuing people is not enough; they need protection and help to rebuild their lives.

A government program called the CSS BLR Scheme gives a 10‑lakh‑rupee fund to give immediate cash to those released from bondage.

The law also says victims should get medical help, counseling, and legal support.

The government must enforce laws better and give victims a clear plan for safety and recovery.

This is important because many victims are children or adults who have been exploited for years.

The goal is to make sure that once people are freed, they can live freely and safely.
