Mumbai had a very hot Sunday in October.

The temperature at the Santacruz weather station reached 38°C.

That is much warmer than usual for this time of year.

It was the second-hottest October day recorded there in 13 years.

The hottest October reading in that period was 38.6°C in 2015.

Forecasters expected hot and humid weather to continue in the short term.

An environmental science professor linked the early heat to the monsoon ending early and a long dry spell.

The weather department said temperatures should start to come down from Tuesday.

Unnamed Mumbai University environmental science professor

A professor of environmental science at Mumbai University who was not named.

“Maximum temperature around 37°C in October is not new for Mumbai. However, this year the temperatures are above normal quite early in the month, which can be directly attributed to early withdrawal of southwest monsoon. The normal monsoon withdrawal date from Mumbai is around October 10, which this year was on October 3, added with long dry spell in September. This results in increased ground temperature.”

“When the region has northeasterly winds, the temperature goes up. Additionally, the heatwave like conditions are felt when the winds settles down in the Arabian sea later on the day (post-noon) as the day time temperature remains high.”
