Pune October Heat Pushes Temperatures Above Normal
Pune is having a hotter-than-usual October.
On Tuesday, Shivajinagar reached 35.7°C, and several parts of the city were also very warm on Wednesday.
Weather officials expect temperatures could rise to 36°C or 37°C in the next few days, though forecasts can be off by about 2°C.
The monsoon winds have moved away, and dry air and clear skies are helping the land heat up.
An IMD scientist also said El Niño can be linked with higher temperatures after the monsoon.
Temperatures this high have happened in October before, but the current heat is unusually strong.
Pune’s daytime temperatures are running 3°C to 4°C above normal.
Shivajinagar recorded 35.7°C on Tuesday, its eighth-highest October maximum; Wednesday’s reading was 35.2°C.
On Wednesday, Lohegaon reached 35.8°C, Chinchwad 35.2°C, Pashan 34.4°C, NDA 33.8°C and Magarpatta 33.6°C.
The India Meteorological Department forecast highs of 36°C to 37°C over the next few days, with uncertainty of about 2°C either way.
An IMD scientist cited the monsoon’s withdrawal, dry air from an anticyclonic circulation, clear skies and El Niño as contributing factors.
