National Sports Governance Act partially implemented
The Indian government has decided that some parts of the National Sports Governance Act will start on January 1, 2026.
This act will create a powerful National Sports Board (NSB) and a National Sports Tribunal (NST).
The NSB will have a chairperson and members chosen by the government.
These members must be experts in sports or administration.
The NST will handle disputes in sports.
All sports bodies must follow new rules, like having small executive committees with at least two famous athletes.
The government wants this change to happen smoothly, so some sports groups can delay their elections until the full act is ready.
The NSB will also check the money matters of sports groups and punish them if they do something wrong.
Members of the NSB can be up to 65 years old and can serve another term if they are still under 65.
The NST members will serve for four years and can be up to 67 years old.
There will also be a panel to manage elections for sports groups.
The National Sports Governance Act will partially come into effect on January 1, 2026.
The Act will establish the National Sports Board (NSB) and National Sports Tribunal (NST).
Executive committees of sports bodies will have a maximum of 15 members, including at least two Sportspersons of Merit.
The NSB will have the power to grant affiliation, monitor finances, and penalize wrongdoing of National Sports Federations (NSFs).
NSFs must obtain NSB affiliation to be eligible for government funding.
