Reliance Retail kaju katli under scrutiny over fungus complaint

Sometimes packaged sweets can have problems, like mold or tiny bugs, which make them unsafe to eat.

A customer in Buldhana, a town in the Indian state of Maharashtra, complained that a sweet called kaju katli sold at a Reliance Retail store had fungus and live larvae in it.

Food safety officials, whose job is to make sure the food we buy is safe, went to inspect the store on August 8.

The sweet in question was made on May 29, 2026, and would expire on August 29.

That particular box was no longer at the store, but the officials found other boxes of the same sweet and took samples to test in a lab.

As a precaution, they took away 54 boxes of the sweet, which weighed 11.34 kilograms.

The officials are now waiting for the lab results to decide if any further action is needed.

In India, food safety rules are covered by a law called the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

This case is part of a bigger effort by India's food safety authority to check food products more strictly, including recent action on cooking oil and sweeteners.
