Gruha Lakshmi probe: Payments made to 7,085 dead persons
The government in this Indian state gives money to families through a program called Gruha Lakshmi.
The money is meant to help families in need.
In a district called Koppal, officials found a big problem.
Money was still being sent to 7,085 people who had died.
When someone dies, their family is supposed to tell the government, but many families did not do this.
So the government started an investigation.
They found and took back Rs.
86 lakh of that money so far.
They think the total problem could be between Rs.
2 crore and Rs.
3 crore.
They also found about 26,000 duplicate accounts, some from outside the state.
Now the government is checking every account very carefully to fix the problem.
Payments under the state government's Gruha Lakshmi scheme reached the bank accounts of 7,085 beneficiaries who had died, with irregularities surfacing in Koppal district.
The Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee has so far recovered Rs. 86 lakh and has placed the matter before the Chief Minister.
District Guarantee Committee President Srinivas Reddy disclosed the findings at a press conference in Koppal on August 8.
Officials estimate that Rs. 2 crore to Rs. 3 crore may have reached incorrect accounts, and scrutiny found about 26,000 multiple accounts, some operated from outside the state.
Koppal lists 3,13,500 Gruha Lakshmi beneficiaries receiving about Rs. 63 crore each month, and every account is now undergoing rigorous verification.
