Telangana Approves True-Up Charges for Electricity Consumers
Telangana’s electricity regulator has allowed power companies to collect money for costs from earlier years.
The extra charge will begin on electricity bills issued in November 2026.
In November, consumers will pay 30 paise for each unit of electricity they use.
From December, the charge will be 50 paise per unit.
The amount is connected to electricity used in the financial years 2022-23 and 2023-24.
The regulator says the charge must be shown separately on the bill.
Agricultural consumers will not pay it.
The power companies are instead directed to seek the agricultural share from the government.
The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission approved true-up charge collection beginning with bills issued in November 2026.
Consumers will pay 30 paise per unit in November, rising to 50 paise per unit from December.
The order permits recovery of about Rs 7,635 crore, including Rs 5,420 crore from consumers and Rs 2,215 crore from the government.
Charges apply to eligible non-agricultural service connections based on electricity used in FY2022-23 and FY2023-24.
The charges must appear as a separate bill item; agricultural consumers are exempt, with their share to be pursued from the government.
