The BJP wants to win Kolkata’s next municipal election.

The election is expected to happen in December.

Kolkata’s municipal corporation will now have 209 wards instead of 144.

BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said his party could win more than 150 wards.

He also said the number might rise to 170 or 180.

He based this expectation partly on results from the recent Assembly election.

The BJP says it was ahead in 101 wards according to those results.

A party committee will choose candidates, and the state president will give final approval.

Quotes

Sukanta Majumdar

Union minister of state for education and BJP panel member for the Kolkata civic polls

“According to the Assembly Election results, BJP has been leading in 101 wards. The Trinamul Congress has been crushed there. Now the number of seats has grown to 209. We expect to win more than 150 among them. I however think that we can get around 170-180.”

“The final approval will come from our state president. His stand is clear. We didn't contest the Assembly polls in an alliance. We fought alone and won so many seats. Naturally we haven't discussed seat sharing for alliance.”
