West Bengal Completes Census Phase One Fieldwork Ahead Of Deadline
West Bengal said it finished the first part of India’s Census before the deadline.
Suvendu Adhikari announced the result on Wednesday.
Workers visited homes and listed them in 1,73,066 areas called House Listing Blocks.
They recorded more than 3.68 crore census houses.
This was nearly 99.7% of the number of homes expected.
Adhikari thanked the workers, officials and residents who helped with the work.
Some families also submitted information online during the self-enumeration period.
The next Census phase is planned for February 2027, with some exceptions.
Suvendu Adhikari said West Bengal completed 100% of Census Phase 1 fieldwork before the September 14, 2026 deadline.
All 1,73,066 House Listing Blocks across the state were reported to have complete coverage.
Officials enumerated 3,68,30,150 census houses against a projected 3.69 crore, or nearly 99.7% of expected households.
Adhikari credited enumerators, supervisors and the state administrative machinery for the achievement.
The second Census phase is scheduled to begin in February 2027, subject to stated exceptions.
