UN Secretary-General Race Begins: Key Determinants Revealed Now
The United Nations is picking a new boss, called the Secretary-General.
On July 30, the Security Council did a secret vote to see who people like to choose.
Three people from Latin America—Rebeca Grynspan, Carolyn Birkett, and Rafael Grossi—looked good in that vote.
To win, a candidate needs at least nine "encourage" votes and no "discourage" votes from any of the 15 council members, especially the big five countries.
After the council picks one name, the whole UN General Assembly will vote to confirm it.
The new Secretary-General will start on January 1, 2027.
This process follows rules in the UN Charter, which says the council recommends and the assembly approves.
