Hasina says Bangladesh gripped by fear, BNP won rigged polls

Speaking from exile in India, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the country remains in the grip of fear, insecurity and economic distress under a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government she alleges won a 'rigged election.'
Hasina announced she would return to Bangladesh by the end of the year, saying the date of her return will be announced later.
She alleged organized groups exploited the July-August 2024 student protests, turning the quota reform movement into a violent campaign demanding her resignation and regime change.
Hasina cited interim government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus's description of the 2024 protests as a 'meticulously designed movement led by a mastermind' as evidence the unrest was organized.
She claimed at least 10,000 people have been killed or disappeared and 650,000 arrested over two years, with more than 600 cases filed against her, and demanded the Awami League ban be lifted and freedom of speech restored.
