A fire broke out early Wednesday in a hotel building in Kolkata.

Mustafizur Rehman and his father were staying in another hotel room in the same building.

Smoke entered their corridor, so they stayed inside until firefighters called for them.

Fire personnel then helped them leave safely.

Nine people died in the fire at the building’s Shikha Inn.

Mustafizur had come from Bangladesh to receive medical treatment.

He has a liver illness that caused bleeding in his food pipe.

Doctors performed a procedure on Friday, and they said his condition was stable.
