Why Verified Income-Tax Refunds Can Still Be Delayed
Filing and verifying your income-tax return does not mean the refund is ready immediately.
The Income Tax Department must first process the return and check the information.
This usually takes about four to five weeks after verification.
Your refund may be delayed if your return is still being processed.
It can also be held up if your TDS or other tax-credit details do not match department records.
An unpaid tax demand from an earlier year may be adjusted against the refund.
Problems with your bank account can stop the payment from arriving.
An inoperative PAN or another compliance issue can also cause trouble.
You can use the e-filing portal to check the status and respond to any pending issue.
Direct tax refunds rose 29.19% year-on-year to ₹2.20 lakh crore by 17 September.
The Income Tax Department received more than 7.8 crore ITRs by 31 August.
Filing and e-verifying an ITR does not mean the refund has been approved or issued.
Refunds can be delayed by processing backlogs, tax-credit mismatches, old demands, bank problems or compliance issues.
The department says refunds generally take about four to five weeks after e-verification.
