Madhya Pradesh to implement UCC in line with Constitution's spirit
On India's Independence Day, the leader of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, made a big announcement.
He said the state will use a set of rules called the Uniform Civil Code, which will be the same for everyone.
The leader said the rules are fair and will help people live together peacefully.
The state's lawmakers approved these rules in July, even though some members of the assembly protested.
The new rules say a person may have only one wife or husband, and couples who live together must register with the government.
Some of the new rules will not apply to tribal communities.
The leader also thanked police and other security workers and said the state is now free of a dangerous group called Naxals.
He talked about making Madhya Pradesh famous as the country's milk capital and getting water to more farm fields.
He also said more doctors are being hired and people across the state will be able to talk to doctors online starting in November 2026.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced at the state-level Independence Day function that Madhya Pradesh will implement the Uniform Civil Code in line with the spirit of the Constitution.

The UCC bans polygamy and makes the registration of live-in relationships mandatory, while excluding the tribal community from its scope.
Yadav paid tribute to police and security personnel who died on the internal security front and said the state has achieved the distinction of becoming Naxal-free.
He outlined goals including making Madhya Pradesh the country's milk capital, expanding irrigation to 100 lakh hectares by 2028-29, and offering online medical consultations statewide from November 1, 2026.
