People in Bhagirathpura, Indore, became ill after sewage contaminated their drinking water.

Thirty-six deaths were reported between December 26, 2025, and February 25, 2026.

A committee led by retired judge Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta investigated what happened.

It said contaminated water was linked to 24 deaths.

In 12 other cases, it could not decide whether the water or other health problems caused the deaths.

The committee blamed six civic officials for administrative failures.

It said an old Narmada pipeline and delays in replacing it allowed contamination risks to continue.

The report reportedly cleared several former commissioners and elected representatives.

The report is still confidential, but lawyers can inspect it and the court is considering the case.
