US Judge Dismisses Fraud Charges Against Adani Group Chairman
A very rich businessman from India named Gautam Adani was in trouble with the law in the United States.
The American government had accused him, his nephew and another person of doing something wrong with money and investments.
But a judge, Nicholas Garaufis, decided to let them go.
This happened because the Justice Department, the group in charge of the case for the government, decided to stop trying to prove they did something wrong.
When a judge dismisses a case 'with prejudice,' it means the same problem can't be brought up again.
A lawyer named Jim Walden explained that the American government was trying to punish people for things that happened far away and did not hurt American citizens.
He said it is hard for a government to do that.
He also said that when new people take charge of the government, the rules about which cases to chase can change.
So the case ended, and the businessman and the other people are no longer in trouble with the American court.
A US judge dismissed criminal fraud charges against Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain with prejudice, meaning the charges cannot be filed again.
The dismissal came after the Justice Department abandoned the prosecution, and the case was handled by US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis.
Charges dismissed included securities fraud, wire fraud conspiracy and securities fraud conspiracy.
Lawyer Jim Walden said the case was an attempt by the US federal government to regulate activity beyond its borders that did not impact US citizens.
Walden noted that courts have limited jurisdiction, enforcement priorities change between administrations, and pending cases for other defendants will go through the DOJ process.
