Jharkhand Rivers in Spate, Flood Threat Looms Across Several Districts
It rained very heavily in a part of India called Jharkhand for many days.
The rivers became so full that water started flowing over their banks.
Some rivers, like the Swarnarekha and Kharkai in Jamshedpur, rose above the safe water level.
In the town of Medininagar, flood water entered people's homes and streets.
More than 200 houses were affected, and in many homes the water reached up to people's knees.
The people in charge opened big dam gates to let some water out safely.
The weather experts, called the India Meteorological Department, warned that more heavy rain is coming.
They told people to stay away from rivers and be ready to move to safer places.
The flood also stopped work on a bridge and cancelled tourist visits near the Palamu Tiger Reserve.
Everyone hopes the rain stops soon so that the water goes down.
Relentless rain has pushed the Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers in Jamshedpur above the danger mark, while the Koel river in Palamu approaches critical levels.
Floodwater has entered low-lying neighbourhoods of Medininagar in Palamu, affecting more than 200 homes, with water reaching knee level in many houses.
Authorities opened eight gates of the Galudih Barrage, all 13 gates of the Ganjia Barrage, and nine gates of the Chandil Dam to release water.
The India Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for six districts and yellow alerts for five districts across Jharkhand.
Barwadih in Latehar recorded the highest rainfall at 318 mm in 24 hours, and heavy rain is forecast to continue across most of the state.
