Mysuru Dasara Elephants Lose Insurance as Staff Cover Surges

Mysuru’s Dasara elephants usually have insurance when they take part in the festival.

In 2026, the Forest Department decided not to insure the elephants themselves.

Officials said this was because the department would have to claim money if one of its own elephants was hurt or died.

Instead, much more insurance was provided for the people who care for and guide the elephants.

There are 39 such workers, and each is covered for ₹20 lakh.

Insurance for damage or injuries caused to other people was also increased to ₹1 crore.

The total insurance package is now ₹8.80 crore.

The policy runs from August 25 to October 22, covering the procession on October 21.
