Maharashtra Appoints 15 Mumbai DCPs As Rent Control Authorities To Handle Tenant-Possession Disputes Under Act · freepressjournal.in

Maharashtra has given 15 senior Mumbai police officers a new responsibility.

They will act as Competent Authorities under the Maharashtra Rent Control Act.

This means they can hear certain disputes between property owners and people using their homes.

The disputes may involve someone not leaving after a rental or licence agreement ends.

Previously, a deputy collector served as the Competent Authority in these matters.

The new arrangement places the authorities within Mumbai’s police zones.

The government says DCPs are senior enough to hold this role.

A housing association leader said the change could make it easier for owners to recover possession of their properties.
