NHRC Seeks Report on Snake Bite Deaths of Tribal Girls
There is a special boarding school in India called an Ashram school where tribal children live and study.
One night, a snake got into the room where some girls were sleeping.
The girls were sleeping on the floor because there were not enough beds.
The snake bit six girls.
Very sadly, three of the girls died from the snake bite.
The other three girls were taken to a hospital to get treatment.
A group called the National Human Rights Commission works to protect people's rights in India.
When this group heard about what happened, it got worried that the girls' rights had been violated.
It asked the Maharashtra government to send a detailed report about the incident within two weeks.
The report must also say how the injured girls are doing in the hospital.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of a media report on a snake bite incident at an Ashram school hostel in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra.
Six girl students belonging to the Scheduled Tribe were bitten by a snake while reportedly sleeping on the hostel floor due to lack of cots.
Three of the students succumbed to the snake bite, while the remaining three were undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The NHRC issued a notice to the Maharashtra Chief Secretary seeking a detailed report, including the health status of the injured students, within two weeks.
According to the media report of 11th August 2026, 79 girl students are accommodated in a single hostel room, and the 25-year-old hostel lacks basic facilities.
