New Zealand Updates Skilled Migrant Visa Rules
New Zealand is changing its rules for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents.
Starting August 24, 2026, there will be two new ways to qualify: one based on work experience and another for trades and technicians.
The existing points system will also be updated, making it easier for some people to qualify.
The changes aim to help skilled workers, especially those in trades and technician jobs, get residency.
People who are already working in New Zealand and plan to apply for this visa should check if they qualify under the new rules.
All draft applications will be deleted on August 24, 2026, so people need to submit their applications before then if they want to use the current rules.
New Zealand will introduce two new residence pathways for skilled workers starting August 24, 2026.
The Skilled Work Experience Pathway requires at least three years of relevant work experience and meeting a wage threshold.
The Trades and Technician Pathway requires a Level 4 or higher qualification and 2.5 years of post-qualification work experience.
The points-based pathway will be updated to include additional points for New Zealand qualifications and revised wage threshold rules.
All draft Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will expire on August 24, 2026, and a new EOI form will be introduced.
