Odisha Expands AI Surveillance in Prisons

The Odisha government is expanding the use of AI-based surveillance systems in its prisons to prevent escapes and violence.

This decision was made during a meeting of the State Jail Development Board, chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja.

Currently, 20 prisons have AI-enabled CCTV cameras that can detect suspicious activities and alert security personnel.

The government is also increasing the height of prison walls and installing modern security equipment.

Additionally, efforts are being made to improve inmate welfare through yoga instructors, mental health counselors, and vocational training.

New model prisons are under construction, and plans include establishing open-air prisons and rationalizing the number of prisons in the state.
