Students at IIT Delhi had been protesting after student Rishikesh Kumar allegedly died by suicide on August 22.

They wanted the institute to investigate what happened and improve support for students with mental-health needs.

The institute has agreed to create an outside inquiry committee.

It also said it would make its mental-health support rules public.

Rishikesh’s mother did not want money from the institute.

Instead, she asked for special housing so students needing mental-health support can remain on campus.

The institute’s director said he would consider her request.

Students have paused their protest because they believe progress has been made, although they and the institute disagree about how some demonstrations were conducted.
